Background:

Joseph Barnard was born at Cumberland Head, near Plattsburg, NY on January 3, 1816. 

He came to Kelley’s mill, Marathon County, WI in October 1845.  He engaged in lumbering, milling and jobbing.  A trusted public servant affectionately known as “Uncle Jo,” he served as Justice of the Peace, Constable and one term as County Coroner from 1852-1853.  In 1868 he was elected sheriff of Marathon County and served in that position from 1869-1870. In his later years, Mr. Barnard worked as a house mover in the city of Wausau.

Joseph Barnard died on May 12, 1888. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
