Background:

son of Erick and Christine Anderson, Albert Anderson was born in Hayward, Wisconsin on October 23, 1889.

Accomplishments:

Albert, feeling that the Hayward area did not offer enough job potential, moved to Minneapolis as a very young man.  There, following his love for the then “new automobiles” coming into being, he enrolled at the YMCA school of mechanics, and luckily for him, when a local businessman needed someone to teach him to drive, Albert was selected.  He taught the man how to drive and that man, in turn, recommended him to his business partner, Mr. Barber of Barber Oil Company, who needed a handyman-chauffeur.  Albert was hired by Mr. Barber.

Albert continued to work for Mr. Barber, even after being told that he would not be paid what he was worth, but Mr. Barber suggested that Albert spend his Saturdays working on cars used by the Barber salesmen, for which he would be paid an additional $10.00 per week.  Mr. Barber also told Albert that he “would have to get a company of your own.”

In 1921, Albert heard from one of the Barber salesmen that Wausau, WI was a town ripe for a new oil company.  He went to Wausau and, liking what he saw, got an initial investment loan from Mr. Barber and started Anderson’s Wausau Oil Company.  Mr. Anderson continued to get his oil from the Barber Oil Company until World War II. When the Minneapolis firm could no longer supply him with all the fuel he needed, he switched to Texaco, and immediately his company experienced tremendous growth.

On April 18, 1918 in Minneapolis, Albert Anderson was married to Katherine Flyckt.    Mr. Anderson was a member of the Wausau Elks Club, Wisconsin Valley Shrine Club, Forest Lodge No. 130, F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Chapter of Valley of Eau Claire and Zor Shrine Temple in Madison.

Albert Anderson, at the age of 96, died in a Wausau nursing home on March 24, 1986.  He is buried in Restlawn Memorial Park in Wausau, WI.
