Background:

Hiram Bean was born on January 21, 1820.  He was a graduate of the Military Academy at West Point and served in the regular army as a corporal for a few years.  Upon his discharge, he came to Wisconsin as a young man of about 30 years of age.

Accomplishments:

In the early 1850s Hiram met and married Miss Triphena A. Moore, a school teacher from Waukesha, WI.  They had the distinction of being the parents of the first white child born within the limits of what is now the city of Mosinee.

Unable to find suitable employment in the Waukesha area, the Beans came to Mosinee. Hiram found work as a bookkeeper for the Joseph Dessert Lumber Company, where he stayed his entire working career.

Mr. Bean was considered the only highly educated man in the entire Mosinee Township.  He was elected to the office of town clerk, an office he held until his death.  He was well-read in civil law, which meant that he was elected as justice of the peace and soon earned the moniker “Judge Bean.”  Over those early years many difficult law cases were brought before him and he resolved every one of them satisfactorily.

Hiram Bean died on January 2, 1881. He is buried in the Mosinee Cemetery in Mosinee, WI.
