Background:
Conrad Althen was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany on August 6, 1826. He came to America in 1854, living in Milwaukee for about two years before migrating to Wausau in 1856. 


Accomplishments:

One of the earliest German settlers to come to Wausau, he operated a tailor shop on the south side of Jackson Street for over 24 years. From that beginning grew one of the largest general mercantile businesses in Wausau.

In 1867 he went to Germany to recuperate from some medical problems and to build up his strength.  He traveled quite extensively on the continent and when he returned to Wausau, brought with him a number of his countrymen to help work the Pinery.  He entered the lumber business in 1874.

Mr. Althen owned several farms around Wausau and personally saw to the cultivation of each of them.

Conrad Althen was married in Germany in October 1853 to Kathrina Schuetz, also from Hesse-Darmstadt. Together they had four children. He was a city Alderman and president of the German Aid Society.

Conrad Althen died at age 80 on December 19, 1906. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
