Background:
Matthew Beebe was born in Chester, Warren County, NY on September 4, 1833. In 1851 he moved to Portville, Cattaraugus County, NY and lived there for one year. In the spring of 1852 he relocated to Wisconsin, first staying in Mineral Point, then moving on to Wausau in early 1853. He was employed as a millwright and lived in a Pine River mill until the outbreak of the Civil War.

Accomplishments:

Mr. Beebe entered the lumber business in 1862 when he took over operations of the Pine River mill owned by his brother-in-law, Edward Armstrong. The mill was sold to John Davies in 1868, and Mr. Beebe stayed on as general manager of the sawing and logging departments until 1877. He then moved back to Wausau and in partnership with John Leahy built the sawmill that quickly became known as the Mortenson and Stone mill. He remained as a partner until 1890, when he sold his interests.

Matthew Beebe was united in marriage in Wausau in March 1874 to Miss Martha Annette Armstrong from St. Lawrence County, NY. They had four children. Tragically, three of those children died in infancy.

Mr. Beebe first held a public office in 1888 when he was elected to represent Marathon County in the state assembly halls at Madison. He held that office until 1890.

Matthew Beebe, in poor health for several years, passed away in Wausau on October 27, 1901. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.

To demonstrate the impact Mr. Beebe had on the Wisconsin Valley, consider this listing of pallbearers for his funeral. It truly represents the giants of Marathon County.
