Background:

Charles Barwig was born in Milwaukee, WI on October 29, 1859 to Charles and Elizabeth (Schwartzburg) Barwig.  When Charles was just five years old, his parents moved the family to Mayville, WI where Mr. Barwig Sr. became a leading citizen and town mayor.  The younger Charles attended the local public schools in Mayville and the German and English Academy, after which he entered into his father’s business. 

Accomplishments:

In May 1903, Mr. Barwig sold all his interest in Mayville and moved to Wausau.  There he started the first wholesale liquor house in the city.  He was one of the organizers of the Citizens State Bank of Wausau and served as a vice president; secretary and treasurer of the Wausau Brick and Tile Company; vice president of the Police and Fire Commission; treasurer of the Wausau Advancement Association; and president of the Marathon County Agricultural Society.  During his days in Mayville he served seven years as town mayor, just like his father. He was a 32^nd degree Mason and a member of both the Elks and the Eagles.

 

Mr. Barwig was married on June 10, 1889 to Miss Bertha Hellberg from Milwaukee.  They were blessed with four children.

 

Charles Barwig died on October 2, 1937.  He is buried in the Mayville, WI cemetery.
