Background:

John Artus was born on June 8, 1820. He is considered the first fulltime farmer/settler in the township of Stettin, arriving in 1856. Many of the early settlers worked in the Single sawmill part-time. A typical early farm included a log house, log barn and log enclosures for hogs and cattle. Stettin did not grow wheat in the early era like some of Wisconsin. As land was cleared, it was turned into pasture for cattle. A cheese factory soon followed. John Artus passed away on October 4, 1903 and is buried in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Rib Falls, WI.
