Background:

William Albers was born in New Holstein, Calumet County, WI on May 20, 1860.  He grew up on a farm and attended the local public schools in New Holstein.  He took courses at Lawrence University and the State University at Madison.  When he completed his education, he moved to Chicago and accepted a position in the drug house of Herman Elich, and then was employed by Theodore Sonnichsen.  He soon decided that his career would be in pharmacy and enrolled at the Chicago College of Pharmacy, graduating in the class of 1884.  



Accomplishments:

Mr. Albers immediately moved to Wausau and went to work at Paul Wernich’s pharmacy, and in less than one year he purchased the business.  Two years later he bought out Mr. A.C. Clark and in 1892, bought the inventory and building of A.A. Frost, where he soon established his east side store.  Five years later he opened another store on the west side.  In addition to running these businesses, he was president and treasurer of the Meyer Drug Company in Stevens Point. 

 

Mr. Albers became widely known in Wisconsin as a member of the state senate from 1910 to 1919, during which time he represented Marathon and Langlade Counties.  In 1908 he was president of the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association.  He served as president of the Wausau Advancement Association and the Chamber of Commerce from 1915 to 1919. For 21 years he served as a member of the Wausau board of education and in 1919 succeeded Granville Jones as board president.

 

Mr. Albers was also president and treasurer of the Wausau Telephone Company and served as director and president of the Wausau Mutual Fire Insurance Company.  He was a prominent member of many of Wausau’s first service clubs, was a Shriner and has attained the 32nd degree in Scottish Rite Masonry.  Until his death he was the oldest living past master of Forest Lodge No. 130, Free & Accepted Masons.  He was a charter member of Wausau Council No. 22, Royal and Select Masters, and was a member in the other York rite Masonic bodies here.

 

William Albers was married in Wausau on May 27, 1885, to Miss Ella Estella Clark of Wausau.  Together they had four children.  Mrs. Albers passed away in 1944 and Mr. Albers soon retired and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  At age 90, he died at his Fort Lauderdale home on January 30, 1951 after a short illness.  He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
