Location:
T. 30 N. - R. 4 E. in or near Sec. 11, Township of Halsey
Founded:
1896
Background:
Most of the land in the area was owned by Rietbrock and other lumber companies. Lamerdin was built near a spring along the Big Rib River in 1896 and settled by former coal miners who had been encouraged by Frederick Rietbrock to move to Wisconsin. They found the rural life difficult and left the settlement after only two years. Possibly Lamerdin was a lumber camp since the post office was in service such a short time.
According to the Halsey Twp. Centennial Book, much of the land was being logged up until 1931 using steam haulers and ice roads to move logs in the winter. Even today, much of the surrounding area is forest land owned by Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources and other large land owners as forest crop land.
