Background:

The village developed west of Galloway around a large sawmill. It actually predates Galloway by a few years.

It was named after Holt, Norway by Mr. Adolph J. Torgerson as his father once lived in Holt, Norway.

About The Post Office:

The P.O. was located in Section 19 of Franzen Township.



Railroad:

The railroad spur of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company was built to the sawmill in 1907 and the railroad tracks at Holt Sawmill were torn out in July 1916. In November 1916, the tracks from the Holt Creek at Holt to the middle of Section 20 were torn out.



Schools:

School District #2 - named Holt School.  It's possible the Holt School was, at first, known as the "Klondike Mill School" and/or "Klondike School" as the nickname to this sawmill community was "Klondike."
