Background:
John Lull was born in Menasha, WI on February 1, 1874 to William and Sarah (Bliss) Lull. As a boy he attended the public schools at Menasha then enrolled at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI. He supplemented that education by taking a business course at and graduating from DeLand’s Business College in Appleton.
Accomplishments:
His first real job, at age sixteen, was as a bookkeeper with well-known Neenah businessman Henry Sherry. He held that position for nine months and impressed Mr. Sherry so much that he was promoted to the position of bookkeeper and office manager of the Mineral Lake Lumber Company, another of Mr. Sherry’s companies at Mineral Lake, WI. At the end of one year he was again promoted, this time to bookkeeper for the Ingersoll Land and Lumber Company at Ingersoll, WI. This was considered one of Mr. Sherry’s most important business ventures, and Mr. Lull remained in that position for four years. Then Mr. Sherry’s businesses crashed and the business was closed by the assignee.
It was at about this time that an investigation was beginning into the treasurers’ accounts in Marathon County, and Mr. Lull was hired as an expert accountant to assist in straightening out the mess. He and fellow accountant G.D. Bartz were hired to design a new set of books for all county offices. The plan they submitted was generally approved, highly praised and at once adopted. When the work was completed, Mr. Lull accepted a position with the Fenwood Lumber Company, as manager of the office and store. Returning to Wausau in 1912, he was employed at the J.M. Kuebler Company until 1925, when he was named Secretary of the Marathon County Building and Loan Association. In 1928 he also formed the Lull Insurance Agency in partnership with A.A. Bock.
Mr. Lull was assessor for the town of Elderon at age twenty-one, was chairman of the town for one year and was a member of the finance committee of the Marathon County Board of Supervisors. He also served as a member of the Wausau city water commission and was on the board of the Federated Charities.
John Lull was married to Miss Elizabeth Single. Mr. Lull was a member of Forest Lodge #130 F. & A.M., Wausau Chapter Number 51 R.A.M. and Wausau Lodge No. 248 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
John Lull died on July 16, 1940. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
