Background:

Roman Deutsch was born in Wausau on February 3, 1888 to Frederic M. and Catherine “Kate” (Klein) Deutsch.  He was educated in the public schools of Wausau then graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI.  His boyhood ambition was to be a businessman, following his father.  As a youngster he shined shoes after school hours.



Accomplishments:

After Marquette, his first paid job came in 1905, starting as a clerk for the German American Bank and advancing to assistant bookkeeper.  After eight years at the bank, he resigned to join his father in the firm of Ritter & Deutsch, furniture dealers and funeral directors.  He became secretary of the firm, serving as manager of the furniture department for 20 years.  After selling the furniture business he took active charge of the funeral home and soon it was considered one of the leading funeral homes in Wisconsin.

 

Mr. Deutsch was president of Marathon County Building & Loan Association, director of First American State Bank, secretary of Lake Wausau Granite Company and an active member of the Wausau Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association.

 

Roman Deutsch was married on May 14, 1918 to Miss Eva Bernier from Mosinee, WI, and together they had three daughters.  He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, the Elks Club, the American Legion, the Eagles, the Knights of Columbus and the Wausau Club.  Mr. Deutsch was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

 

Roman Deutsch died on December 18, 1952.  He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
