Background:

Herman Flieth was born in Sheboygan, WI on February 26, 1861. Herman’s parents, Fred & Katherine (Haefner) Flieth, were of foreign birth, his father from Prussia and his mother from Germany.  They had emigrated here in the early 1850s.  Young Herman was educated in the public and parochial schools in Sheboygan until he was fifteen years old.

Accomplishments:

He became a railroad employee working with the construction department, and upon completion of the road, he was made freight check clerk and later baggagemaster.  His career advanced rapidly with the railroad as he learned telegraphy and held the position of telegraph operator for several years.

Mr. Flieth came to Wausau in 1880, and, as agent, took control of the office for the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western, later the Chicago & Northwestern, and continued in that role until May 1, 1887.  He was then sent to Milwaukee as commercial agent and stayed there for six years, until he resigned his position to accept the Cashier position with the National German American Bank in Wausau.

As the bank grew, Mr. Flieth became involved with several other business ventures. He served as president of the Thompson & Flieth Lumber Company. He was secretary and treasurer of the Peth Canning Company and of the Wausau Realty and Loan Company. Additionally, he served as treasurer of the Wausau Canning Company, the Wausau Quartz Company, the Marathon County Building, Loan and Investment Association, and the Wisconsin Bankers Association.

On June 17, 1880, Herman Flieth was married to Miss Mary Harsch, daughter of Adam Harsch, and together they had two children.

Herman Flieth, at age 68, died on March 9, 1929 after a short illness. His remains are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
