Background:
Robert Altman, son of Robert M. and Doris Altman, was born in Wausau, Wisconsin on September 25, 1917.After graduating from Wausau High School and then the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1941, he worked in the legal department of Lumberman’s Mutual Insurance Company in Chicago, Illinois. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was discharged in 1945 as a lieutenant after commanding a landing ship in the South Pacific theater during World War II. He was awarded five Bronze Stars.
Accomplishments:
Mr. Altman entered private law practice in Wausau in 1946. He was appointed and then was elected to serve as Marathon County district attorney in 1950-1954. He resumed private law practice until he joined Wisconsin Valley Trust Company in 1965 as administrative vice president. He was elected president in 1969 and chairman of the board in 1980.He retired from active service in mid 1981.
On April 10, 1943, in Chicago, Robert Altman was united in marriage to Anne Curry. Their marriage was blessed with two sons. Mr. Altman was active in the Masonic order, was a member of Forest Lodge #130, F. & A.M., Wausau Chapter 51, Royal Arch Masons, Wausau Council 22, Royal and Select Masons, St. Omer Commandery No. 19, Knights Templar, Eau Claire Consistory, and the Tripoli Shrine Temple. He had been a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, Marathon County, State and American Bar Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wausau Club, Wausau Country Club, Jaycees and Elks.
Robert Altman was a director of the Wausau Area Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA, and headed two Community Chest campaigns and two March of Dimes drives. He was a former member of the DC Everest School Board, serving five years as president. He was also treasurer of the North Central Technical Institute Foundation and a director of the Alexander Foundation. He was a founder of the Pine Island Protective Association at Schofield, acted in several Community Theater productions and was a Little League baseball umpire in Schofield and Wausau for many years. A 35-year member and past president and secretary of the Wausau Curling Club, he skipped four club championship rinks and was named an honorary life member in 1981. He served as treasurer of the U.S. Curling Association in 1976. Mr. Altman was named man of the Year by Wausau Jaycees, receiving the distinguished service award in 1948.
Robert Altman died on November 6, 1987.
